Disney Cruise Packing Guide

What to bring, what to leave home and what belongs in your embarkation-day bag

Illustrated Disney Cruise Packing Guide cover showing packed luggage and a Disney ship.

Packing for a Disney cruise is easier once you stop treating it like a survival expedition.

You do not need to bring your entire house.

You do need to think carefully about what you need before checked luggage reaches your room, what you will actually use and what Disney does not allow onboard.

Quick Answer

For most Disney cruises, pack:

  • required travel documents
  • medications
  • swimsuit
  • sunscreen
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • casual clothing
  • dinner clothes
  • light layer or rain jacket
  • phone and charging cables
  • portable battery
  • sunglasses
  • small day bag
  • refillable water bottle
  • any essential child or medical supplies

Then stop.

You probably need less than you think.

Embarkation-Day Carry-On

Keep with you:

  • medications
  • passport / required citizenship documents
  • valuables
  • spare glasses/contacts
  • sunscreen
  • hat
  • swimsuit
  • cover-up
  • phone
  • charger
  • portable battery
  • wallet
  • children's essentials

If losing access to it for six hours would create a problem, carry it.

Put the Swimsuit in the Carry-On

You may board before your stateroom or checked luggage is available. A swimsuit in your carry-on lets vacation begin immediately.

Travel Documents and Medication

Never check them.

Bring enough medication for the cruise, travel days and a small delay buffer.

Clothing

For Bahamas/Caribbean:

Daytime

  • T-shirts
  • shorts
  • swimsuits
  • cover-ups
  • sandals
  • sneakers
  • hat
  • sunglasses

Evening

  • casual dinner clothing
  • one or two dressier outfits if desired

Weather

  • light sweater
  • windbreaker
  • rain jacket or poncho

Dinner Dress Code

Main dining is generally cruise casual. You do not need seven formal outfits.

Adult dining is more polished. Check the current rules for Palo, Palo Steakhouse, Remy or Enchanté.

Pirate Night

Costumes are optional. Family-friendly costumes are fine; realistic weapon-like props are not.

Shoes

Most people need:

  • comfortable walking shoes
  • sandals/flip-flops
  • optional dress shoes

You do not need twelve pairs.

Light Layer and Rain Gear

Bring a lightweight sweater or jacket even in the Caribbean. Ships contain aggressive air conditioning.

A compact rain jacket or poncho earns its space.

Sunscreen, Water Bottle and Portable Battery

All useful. Your phone handles Navigator, photos, video, messages, maps and travel documents. A power bank is more useful than spending vacation time hunting for an outlet.

Electrical Items

Do not bring prohibited items such as:

  • extension cords
  • power strips
  • surge protectors
  • irons
  • steamers
  • coffee makers
  • heating appliances
  • streaming devices such as Fire Stick / Apple TV / Roku

Disney provides irons and ironing boards in laundry areas and a hair dryer in staterooms.

Food and Coolers

Factory-sealed nonperishable snacks are generally allowed. Homemade, precooked, perishable and open food is not.

Coolers are restricted except for specific needs such as medication, baby food or dietary items.

Kids Packing

Prioritize:

  • swimsuit
  • comfortable clothes
  • pajamas
  • light layer
  • walking shoes
  • sunscreen
  • medication
  • favorite small comfort item
  • necessary baby/toddler supplies

Disney already built an entire ship to entertain them.

Disney Island Day Bag

Bring:

  • Key to the World card / required ID
  • sunscreen
  • sunglasses
  • hat
  • phone/camera
  • waterproof phone pouch
  • medication
  • refillable bottle
  • cover-up
  • small payment access

Disney provides towels.

Useful Extras

  • waterproof phone pouch
  • small day bag
  • packing cubes
  • lightweight laundry bag

Magnetic hooks can be useful but are not essential.

Laundry

On longer cruises, washing once is better than packing twice as much.

What Not to Bring

Disney's prohibited-items rules include categories such as weapons, fireworks, illegal drugs, marijuana/THC/CBD products, many electrical appliances, drones, certain sporting equipment and power strips.

Always check the current prohibited-items page before sailing.

Alaska Packing

Alaska needs:

  • waterproof shell
  • warm mid-layer
  • long pants
  • sturdy footwear
  • gloves
  • hat
  • sweater/fleece
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • binoculars

Do not use a Bahamas packing list for Alaska.

Europe Packing

Bring at least one outfit appropriate for religious/cultural sites that require covered shoulders or legs.

What I Would Pack for a 4-Night Bahamas Cruise

  • 4 casual shirts
  • 2–3 shorts
  • 1 casual pant
  • 2 swimsuits
  • 1 dinner outfit
  • 1 light layer
  • sandals
  • sneakers
  • underwear/socks
  • sleepwear
  • sunscreen
  • sunglasses
  • hat
  • toiletries
  • medication
  • phone + charger
  • portable battery
  • small day bag

What I Would Pack for a 7-Night Caribbean Cruise

Do not double everything. Bring roughly 5–6 casual tops, 3–4 shorts, 1–2 pants, 2 swimsuits, 2 dinner outfits and a light layer, then use laundry if needed.

Five Things I Would Absolutely Not Forget

  1. Required travel documents
  2. Medication
  3. Phone and charger
  4. Swimsuit in carry-on
  5. Comfortable shoes

Five Things I Would Leave Home

  1. Beach towels
  2. Power strip
  3. Iron or steamer
  4. Massive amounts of clothing
  5. Every cruise gadget TikTok has ever recommended

Tiki Tim's Packing Rule

Pack the things that are difficult to replace.

Documents. Medication. Comfortable shoes. The right clothes for the destination.

Then pack lighter than you think you should.

Nobody gets to the end of a Disney cruise and says:

“You know what really made this vacation magical? Carrying six suitcases through the terminal.”

Bring less.

Cruise more.
