We Skipped the Cruise Excursions in Cozumel. Here’s Why We Chose Hotel B Instead
We skipped the usual Cozumel cruise excursions and spent our port day at Hotel B. Discover our experience, day pass details, and planning tips.

Sometimes the best cruise excursion is the one you plan yourself.
Cozumel is one of those cruise ports where everybody seems to have a plan for you.
There are snorkeling excursions, beach clubs, shopping tours, all-inclusive resorts, and enough organized activities to fill several vacations. The moment you step off the ship, there's no shortage of opportunities to spend your day and your money.
But what if you don't want any of that?
What if your idea of a perfect day in Cozumel involves an incredible ocean view, a beautiful pool, cold drinks, good food, and absolutely no need to follow somebody holding a numbered sign?
That's exactly what we were looking for.
During a Super Bowl weekend cruise aboard Margaritaville at Sea, Miranda, some friends, and I decided to skip the traditional shore excursions and do something different.
We grabbed a taxi from the cruise pier and headed to Hotel B Cozumel, a boutique waterfront hotel on the island's northern coast.
It turned out to be exactly the kind of port day we wanted.
And yes, we'd absolutely do it again.
Why We Skipped the Typical Cozumel Shore Excursions
There's nothing inherently wrong with organized cruise excursions.
For many travelers, they're convenient. Everything is arranged, transportation is included, and you generally know what you're getting.
But they aren't always how we want to spend our vacation.
One of the things I love about cruising is getting to experience different destinations. The frustrating part is that sometimes the excursions can make those destinations feel like one big tourist attraction.
You get off the ship, join the crowds, follow the schedule, and spend much of your time doing exactly what thousands of other cruise passengers are doing.
Sometimes that's fun.
Other times, we'd rather find our own little corner of paradise.
For this particular stop in Cozumel, we weren't interested in packing our limited hours with activities. We wanted somewhere beautiful to relax, enjoy the Caribbean, have a few drinks with friends, and simply enjoy being there.
Hotel B checked those boxes.
Discovering Hotel B Cozumel
Located along Cozumel's northern hotel zone, Hotel B is a boutique oceanfront property overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
It's a different setting from the enormous all-inclusive beach resorts and high-energy cruise excursion destinations that many visitors associate with the island.
The appeal is the waterfront itself.
Hotel B has an infinity pool overlooking the sea, lounging areas, food and drink service, and a distinctive hot tub built among the rocks.
There's no need to book an overnight room to enjoy the property when a day pass is available.
For cruise passengers like us, that made it an appealing alternative.
We could leave the ship, enjoy a resort-style experience, and return without dedicating our entire day to a scheduled excursion.

Getting to Hotel B From Our Cruise Ship
We kept transportation simple.
After leaving Margaritaville at Sea, we took a taxi from the cruise pier to Hotel B.
The hotel is located at Carretera Playa San Juan, kilometer 2.5, in Cozumel's northern hotel zone.
Because Cozumel has multiple cruise terminals, the drive will depend on where your ship docks.
If you're thinking about making the same trip, confirm the taxi fare with your driver before leaving the port and make sure you have a plan for getting back.
This is especially important when you're exploring independently.
Cruise ships operate on ship time, which may not match local time, and the last thing you want is to turn an incredibly relaxing afternoon into a frantic race back to the pier.
Give yourself plenty of breathing room.
After all, the whole point of a day like this is to avoid stress.
The Hotel B Day Pass: Food, Drinks, and Time to Relax
One of the things we appreciated about our visit was the way our day pass worked.
Rather than simply paying an admission fee to sit beside a pool, we purchased a pass that provided a credit toward food and drinks.
That meant we could enjoy the facilities while using the credit for things we were already planning to purchase.
And let's face it, if you're spending the afternoon beside the Caribbean Sea, food and a few drinks are probably going to be part of the equation.
We enjoyed both during our visit.
The exact cost of a Hotel B day pass can change, and packages may have different inclusions. Before visiting, confirm the current price, available facilities, and food-and-beverage credit directly with the property.
Also, be sure you're booking the correct hotel. Hotel B Cozumel and the neighboring Hotel B Unique are related properties, but their day-pass offerings should not be assumed to be interchangeable.
For us, the credit-based arrangement was a good fit for the kind of day we wanted.
The Atmosphere: Exactly What We Needed
If I had to describe our afternoon at Hotel B in one word, it would be chill.
And I mean really chill.
The views were incredible.
The Caribbean stretches out beyond the property, with beautiful blue water providing the backdrop for nearly everything.
There's something about being beside that water, enjoying a drink, and knowing you don't have anywhere else you need to be for a while.
No excursion itinerary.
No guide telling you it's time to move to the next stop.
No pressure to squeeze another attraction into the afternoon.
Just the surroundings, good company, and the chance to enjoy them.
That was the experience we were looking for when we decided to skip the usual cruise excursions.
Hotel B delivered.

The Pool and the Hot Tub in the Rocks
The pool was one of the highlights of our visit.
Hotel B's infinity pool overlooks the Caribbean, making it an ideal spot to spend a portion of your port day.

And then there's the hot tub.
Not just a standard resort hot tub tucked beside a swimming pool, but one incorporated into the rocky oceanfront setting.
It's one of those details that gives the property character.
We enjoyed both the pool and the rock-set hot tub during our visit, and they were a big part of why the experience stood out.
It's also worth understanding that Hotel B isn't a traditional wide, sandy beach destination.
The waterfront is rocky, with views and access to the sea rather than the kind of expansive beachfront you'd find at some of Cozumel's larger beach clubs.
If your dream excursion involves walking straight from a lounge chair onto a long stretch of soft sand, another property may be a better match.
But if you're drawn to dramatic ocean views, a beautiful pool, and a more intimate waterfront setting, Hotel B has plenty of appeal.
Food, Drinks, and Excellent Service
A beautiful hotel is one thing.
A beautiful hotel with excellent service is another.
We spent part of our afternoon enjoying food and drinks, taking advantage of the credit included with our day passes.
But what made the experience even better was the staff.
They were amazing.
Good service has a way of changing the entire feel of a place. When you're trying to relax, the last thing you want is to feel like you're bothering someone whenever you need something.
Our experience at Hotel B was the opposite.
The combination of the setting, food, drinks, and hospitality made it easy to settle in and enjoy the afternoon.
We weren't looking for an elaborate dining experience or a packed entertainment schedule.
We simply wanted a great place to spend our time.
And that's what we found.

Why Hotel B Felt Different From the Usual Cruise Experience
Here's what I think made this day so memorable.
We weren't trying to see everything in Cozumel.
We weren't trying to do everything.
We weren't even trying to find the most exciting excursion.
We just wanted to enjoy the island without getting caught up in the crowds, drama, and tourist traps that sometimes come with popular cruise destinations.
And there's a surprising amount of freedom in that decision.
When you only have a few hours in port, there's a temptation to maximize every minute by filling it with activities.
But maximizing your time doesn't necessarily mean maximizing your schedule.
Sometimes it means finding a fantastic spot, settling in, and enjoying exactly where you are.
That's what Hotel B gave us.
A chance to stop treating our time in Cozumel like a checklist.
And start treating it like a vacation.
Is Hotel B Cozumel Worth It for Cruise Passengers?
Based on our experience, absolutely.
But it depends on what kind of port day you're looking for.
Hotel B is a great fit if you:
- Prefer a laid-back atmosphere over organized entertainment.
- Want gorgeous Caribbean views and a beautiful pool.
- Enjoy having food and drinks available without leaving the property.
- Appreciate smaller, boutique-style hotels.
- Would rather arrange your own transportation than join a large excursion group.
- Want to spend quality time with your travel companions without a packed schedule.
You might prefer another excursion if you:
- Want an expansive sandy beach.
- Are looking for waterslides, big resort activities, or organized entertainment.
- Want to explore multiple Cozumel attractions in one day.
- Prefer having cruise-line transportation and excursion logistics handled for you.
Neither approach is wrong.
For this particular trip, Hotel B was exactly what we wanted.
How to Plan Your Own Hotel B Cozumel Day Pass
If you're considering Hotel B during a future Cozumel cruise stop, here are a few things I'd recommend.
Check your ship's port schedule. Know which cruise terminal you're visiting and exactly when you need to be back aboard.
Contact Hotel B before your trip. Confirm day-pass availability, pricing, food-and-beverage credits, and which facilities are included. Availability and policies can change.
Arrange transportation. Taxis are an option from Cozumel's cruise terminals. Confirm fares and allow extra time for the return trip.
Bring what you need for a pool day. Swimwear, sunscreen, sunglasses, and whatever else makes your time beside the water comfortable. Ask whether towels are included.
Don't overplan the afternoon. The best part of this experience is having the freedom to enjoy the property at your own pace.
You can learn more about the property on the official Hotel B Cozumel website.

Would We Go Back to Hotel B Cozumel?
Without hesitation.
We've visited Cozumel on a cruise, and this experience reinforced something I've come to appreciate more and more about travel.
The most memorable days aren't always the ones with the biggest excursions or the longest list of activities.
Sometimes they're the afternoons you spend with people you enjoy, in a beautiful place, without a demanding itinerary.
Hotel B gave Miranda, our friends, and me exactly that.
The incredible views, the pool, the hot tub in the rocks, the food, the drinks, and especially the wonderful staff made this one of those places we'd happily visit again.
And the next time our cruise takes us to Cozumel?
Hotel B will definitely be on our shortlist.
Adventure looks better in a Hawaiian shirt.
